KOLOROID

I've started working on this project with a very simple idea: make a series of intimate, spontaneous portraits which aren't just documentary types but also tangible and real. They represent all the values of The Ensemble of National Dances of Serbia KOLO and also the reality of this art, the events that are happening behind the scene. The beauty and chaos of these moments.
Each portrait was made behind the scenes just before the performance, at the moment of a complete chaos: costumes are getting dressed, dancers are running to their positions, everyone is nervous and excited. Just at that moment, I photograph them while they are standing in front of the backdrop which is a plastic cloth that we use in our households, cottages, on our tables. Instead of setting it on a table I glued this cloth on a wall.
I took pictures of them with my Polaroid and while the photo is drying in my hand, the dancers are running toward the scene where they immediately start performing. Everything that happens in these 20 seconds, all the emotions, colours, all the chaos, everything was fitted in that one small square.
One of the main guides of these portraits was the dancers costumes. Folk costumes have a lot of meanings in different contexts, but for me, folk costumes represent the fashion of one era and people.

The photo was taken on Mount Goč in Serbia at the hotel before breakfast was served.
